USDA Releases Crop Production Reports for 2020

On Tuesday, January 12th, the USDA National Agriculture Statistics Service (NASS) issued new crop production estimates for the 2020 crop year. The report compares 2020 production numbers with previous years and includes estimated acres planted and yield per acre for each commodity.

National data:

Corn for grain production in 2020 was estimated at 14.2 billion bushels, up 4 percent from the 2019 estimate. The average yield in the United States was estimated at 172.0 bushels per acre, 4.5 bushels above the 2019 yield of
167.5 bushels per acre. Area harvested for grain was estimated at 82.5 million acres, up 1 percent from the 2019 estimate.

Sorghum: Grain production in 2020 was estimated at 373 million bushels, up 9 percent from the 2019 total. Planted area for 2020 was estimated at 5.88 million acres, up 12 percent from the previous year. Area harvested for grain, at
5.10 million acres, was up 9 percent from 2019. Grain yield was estimated at 73.2 bushels per acre, up 0.2 bushel from 2019.

Rice: Production in 2020 totaled 228 million cwt, up 23 percent from the 2019 total. Planted area for 2020 was estimated at 3.04 million acres, up 19 percent from 2019. Area harvested, at 2.99 million acres, was up 21 percent from the previous crop year. The average yield for all United States rice was estimated at 7,619 pounds per acre, up 146 pounds from the 2019 average yield of 7,473 pounds per acre.

Soybean production in 2020 totaled 4.14 billion bushels, up 16 percent from 2019. The average yield per acre was estimated at 50.2 bushels, up 2.8 bushels from 2019. Harvested area was up 10 percent from 2019 to 82.3 million acres.

All cotton production is estimated at 15.0 million 480-pound bales, down 25 percent from 2019. The United States yield is estimated at 825 pounds per acre, up 2 pounds from last year. Harvested area, at 8.70 million acres, is down 25 percent from last year.

State data:

Arkansas corn area harvested is 605,000, down 18 percent from 2019. The average yield is estimated at 184 bushels per acre, up 9 bushels from last year. Production totaled 111 million bushels, down 13 percent from 2019.

Upland cotton harvested acres is 520,000, down 15 percent from 2019. The yield is expected to average 1,200 pounds per harvested acre, up 15 pounds from last year. Production is estimated at 1.30 million bales, down 14 percent from 2019.

All hay harvested is 1.27 million acres, up 2 percent from 2019. The average yield is estimated at 2.10 tons per acre, down 0.10 ton from last year. Production totaled 2.68 million tons, down 3 percent from 2019.

Area harvested for peanuts is 38,000 acres, up 15 percent from 2019. The average yield is estimated at 4,800 pounds per acre, down 400 pounds from last year. Production totaled 182 million pounds, up 6 percent from 2019.

All rice acres harvested is 1.44 million acres, up 28 percent from 2019. The all rice yield for is estimated at 7,500 pounds per acre, up 20 pounds from last year. Production totaled 108 million hundredweight, up 28 percent from 2019.

Soybean area harvested is 2.78 million acres, up 7 percent from 2019. The average yield is estimated at 50 bushels per acre, up 1 bushel from last year. Production totaled 139 million bushels, up 9 percent from 2019.

Area seeded to winter wheat for 2021 is forecasted up 24 percent from the previous year to 180,000 acres.
