WTO Names New Director General

The World Trade Organization (WTO) recently named Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, a Nigerian economist and former finance minister, to serve as Director General of the WTO. She will be the 7th Director General and the first woman and first African to lead the World Trade Organization. She will officially take office on March 1st and her term will expire on August 31, 2025.

The WTO is a multi-national organizational body established in 1995 to serve as a forum for governments to establish trade rules, negotiate trade agreements, and settle trade disputes. The organization is comprised of over 160 members representing 98 per cent of world trade. Over 20 countries are seeking to join the WTO.
