USDA Sends $75 Million to Arkansas for Rural Electric & Broadband Systems

USDA announced it was making a $75 million Rural Development investment in Arkansas to the Electric Cooperatives of Arkansas to finance the installation of over 2,000 miles of fiber optic cable to provide a backbone communications network for Smart Grid purposes. The system will improve energy efficiency within the grid and offer additional capacity to serve broadband needs in rural communities in Arkansas.

Arkansas Electric is a generation and transmission cooperative with headquarters based in Little Rock, Arkansas and provides wholesale electric service to 17 electric distribution cooperative members, including 74 Arkansas counties.
