USDA Announces Funding for Increased Fertilizer Production

On Friday, March 11, USDA announced a new plan to make available $250 million to support additional fertilizer production in the United States. The goal of the program is to address rising fertilizer costs, reduce dependence on imports from areas related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and to spur greater competition in the fertilizer marketplace. According to USDA, the funding, which available through the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) set aside in September for market disruptions, will be utilized to develop a grant program that provides ‘gap’ financing to bring new, independent domestic production capacity on-line. The program will be structured similarly to a recently announced meat and poultry grant program that was designed to promote competition and resilience in that sector.
