UofA Studying Microwave Technology for Drying Rice at Mills

Researchers at the University of Arkansas are studying microwave technology to determine if it may provide a faster and more efficient drying system for rice than conventional heated-air drying systems currently utilized at rice mills and storage facilitities. The purpose of the research, which is in partnership with AMTek Microwaves, is to pursue the development of a product that could significantly increase profitability for the rice industry by lowering drying costs, increasing milling yields, and expediting the drying process. The research is funded in part by the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) through a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant.
