U.S. Calls China Out for Arbitrary Import Restrictions

Another bump in the road for U.S.-China trade relations came this week when China announced that it would prohibit imports of meat products from certain production facilities in the United States where COVID-19 infections were present. The arbitrary trade barriers that China announced were not based on any scientific data that proved a known posed risk to human health, and the U.S. was quick to criticize the decision. In addition to the issue of meat imports, there were also news reports that China wants guarantees that soybean imports are also free of COVID-19 virus contamination despite international authorities uniformly stating that there is no evidence that the coronavirus can be transmitted from food to people.
