Safety Net Considerations for Cotton Producers

With increases to cotton prices, the National Cotton Council (NCC) is advising producers to consider crop insurance options, including STAX. It's expected that Price Loss Coverage (PLC) program payments will not trigger for the 2022 crop year. According to the NCC data, cotton farmers should consider purchasing coverage under the STAX program if they wish to provide risk protection for the 2022 crop year. Under the 2018 farm bill farmers can enroll their seed cotton base in ARC or PLC, or choose to purchase STAX coverage through a private crop insurance agent. The sales closing date for purchasing STAX coverage in Arkansas is February 28th.

It's important to note that growers cannot enroll a farm's seed cotton base in ARC or PLC and be eligible for STAX insurance. Farmers can re-enroll seed cotton acres in the PLC or ARC program in the 2023 crop year if they wish.
