RIPE Calls for $100 Per Acre Payments for Conservation Activities

The Rural Investment to Protect our Environment (RIPE) group, a coalition of agricultural organizations supported with funding by private foundations, is seeking new conservation policy to address climate change that offers farmers incentives of a minimum of $100 per acre to apply certain conservation programs on their farms. The proposed program, known as the RIPE100 plan, would "reward farmers for the total public value of their conservation practices," beyond simply focusing on carbon sequestration. The plan is to develop a more meaningful voluntary federal program to address soil health, water conservation, biodiversity and other environmental services.
