New GAO Report Cited by Critics of Recent Farm Aid

A recently released report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO) examining recent aid funding for farmers is now being used by some to express frustration, criticism and opposition to Secretary Perdue's aid programs already offered and any future program. For example, Senate Agriculture Committee Ranking Member, Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) recenty stated that she is not going to sign off on more money fro USDA's Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) without having more say in how the money is spent. In her words, she said that she does not want to “provide another blank check to USDA when we know that what they’ve done already is not fair.”

It is the opinion of the Ag Council of Arkansas that Secretary Perdue is to be commended for his efforts to help farmers in Arkansas. While no program is perfect, we believe that Secretary Perdue provided aid that was well targeted and fair. And, we hope he and Congress are able to quickly provide additional meaningful aid to help farmers cope with the ongoing trade disruptions, pandemic, natural disasters, and market declines.
