New Bill Introduced in U.S. Senate to Ban Various Pesticides

On November 23rd, U.S. Senator Cory Booker (D-NJ) announced the introduction of a bill (Protect America’s Children from Toxic Pesticides Act of 2021 (PACTPA)) aimed at removing registrations of certain pesticides utilized by farmers in the United States. Specifically, this legislation would update the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act of 1972 (FIFRA) by banning certain pesticides including organophosphate insecticides, neonicotinoids insecticides, and paraquat herbicide.

The legislation was immediately criticized by Crop Life America (CLA), a trade organization comprised of makers of crop protection products. The group noted the important role of crop protection products in providing safe, abundant and affordable food. It also highlighted the importance of FIFRA, which is the strictest environmental regulatory regime in the world.
