LSU Researchers Making Progress Towards Newer, Safer Feral Hog Bait

Scientists with the LSU AgCenter and the LSU Department of Chemistry appear to be making continued progress towards delivering a commercial bait and delivery system to help reduce the population of feral hogs. Researchers at LSU AgCenter have worked for more than two years to bring a sodium nitrate based bait product that can effectively address feral hog populations with minimal risks to off-target animal species. The development of both the bait and delivery system appear to be gaining momentum towards reaching consumer markets, but they will likely have to undergo additional research and verification trials before being approved widely for commercial use.

Arkansas landowners looking to address feral hog problems on their property can contact USDA APHIS Wildlife Services at 501-835-2318. The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture has a resource page dedicated to assisting with the management of these pests, which is linked here.
