Land O'Lakes' Truterra Makes Big Move into Carbon Market with Microsoft

Land O'Lakes' Truterra initiative recently announced a significant sale of carbon credits to Microsoft Corporation in a transaction that will provide new revenues to farmers who are selling carbon credits through Truterra. According to news reports, the transaction with Microsoft is for 100,000 metric tons with farmers receiving $20 per ton of carbon captured. The Soil Health Institute is collaborating with Truterra as the scientific partner for soil metrics and sampling design for TruCarbon, the first farmer-owned carbon program in the United States. TruCarbon is also a subsidiary of Land O'Lakes. For farmers in the Mid-South, GreenPoint Ag will serve as the primary Truterra and TruCarbon retailer.

Microsoft's plans to purchase enough carbon credits to be carbon negative by 2030. Farmers participating in the program are expected to also participate in the Truterra Insights Engine — a software program that not only provides farmers with a score card of their fields’ performance on key metrics such as soil erosion or greenhouse gas emissions but also profitability.

Interested farmers can find out more about the program and enroll at www.truterraag.com/CarbonSurvey.
