House Ag Committee Looks at Carbon Markets

On Thursday, September 23rd, the U.S. House Committee on Agriculture held a hearing on emerging carbon markets. The hearing included consideration of the Growing Climate Solutions Act, which passed the U.S. Senate this summer. The discussion also offered analysis and critiques of private carbon payment programs offered by businesses seeking to aggregate and market carbon credits. At the hearing, both democrats and republicans raised concerns over the role of USDA in regulating carbon markets and how private businesses engage in the marketplace, however both offered interest in developing carbon markets that could benefit farmers and reduce greenhouse gases.
