House Ag Committee Holds Hearing on Climate Policy

The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Agriculture held a hearing on February 25th focused on climate change and climate policy. The hearing was the first hearing of the committee in the 117th Congress under new committee chairman David Scott (D-GA). The U.S. Senate Agriculture Committee under the leadership of chairwoman Stabenow is expected to also hold a hearing on the issue of climate change and climate policy. It's likely that new legislation will emerge in an effort to create new incentives for farmers to reduce greenhouse gas emissions or capture carbon as well as other beneficial agricultural and conservation practices. It is not clear how such legislation would be crafted, funded, or considered in Congress. It's also not clear how such new proposed policy might affect other ongoing programs supporting the U.S. agriculture industry.
