Groups Sue USDA on Food Labeling Foods Containing Genetically Enhanced Components

A new lawsuit was filed by a coalition challenging USDA food labeling rules related to foods containing genetically enhanced ingredients. The primary objection relates to the USDA's allowance of food makers to utilize QR codes in disclosing relevant ingredients. The USDA rules related to such labeling were implemented in 2019 and were a requirement under a law approved by Congress in 2016 with the primary objective of providing a universal federal labeling requirement rather than multiple varying state labeling requirements.
