USDA NASS Issues August 12 Crop Production Reports

On Wednesday, August 12th, the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) issued Crop Production Reports. The reports provided estimates for the 2020 crop in relation to production numbers from the 2019 crop year. For the U.S., corn production is estimated to be up 12 percent from 2019, soybean production is estimated to be up 25 percent from 2019, and cotton production is estimated to be down 9 percent from 2019. The latest national estimates did not include the impact of the recent weather events that reportedly caused significant crop damage throughout the corn belt.

For Arkansas, corn and cotton production is estimated to be down from 2019 while yield is expected to be up. Rice yield and production are expected to be up while soybeans production is estimated to be unchanged with increased overall production.

Arkansas Summary:

Arkansas corn for grain production is forecast at 113 million bushels, down 11 percent from 2019. Based on conditions as of August 1, yield is expected to average 181 bushels per acre, up 6 bushels from last year. Producers expect to harvest 625,000 acres of corn for grain, down 100,000 acres from 2019.

Upland cotton production is forecast at 1.22 million bales, down 19 percent, or 286,000 bales below last year. Based on conditions as of August 1, yield is expected to average 1,195 pounds per harvested acre, up 10 pounds from 2019. Producers expect to harvest 490,000 acres of cotton, down 120,000 acres from 2019.

Hay production, excluding alfalfa, is forecast at 2.55 million tons, down 7 percent from 2019. Based on conditions as of August 1, yield is expected to average 1.90 tons per acre, down 0.30 ton from last year. Producers expect to harvest 1.34 million acres of hay, excluding alfalfa, up 90,000 acres from 2019.

Peanut production in 2020 is forecast at 167 million pounds, down 3 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of August 1, yield is expected to average 4,900 pounds per acre, down 300 pounds from last year. Area for harvest, at 34,000 acres, is up 1,000 acres from 2019.

All rice production for the state is forecast at 106 million hundredweight, up 26 percent from last year's production of 84.3 million hundredweight. Based on conditions as of August 1, the all rice yield for 2020 is forecast at 7,550 pounds per acre, up 70 pounds from last year. Producers expect to harvest 1.40 million acres of rice, up 275,000 acres from 2019.

Soybean production in 2020 is forecast at 143 million bushels, up 11 percent from last year. Based on conditions as of August 1, yield is expected to average 49 bushels per acre, unchanged from last year. Area for harvest, at 2.91 million acres, is up 300,000 acres from 2019.
