Additional COVID Aid Package Unlikely Before Election as Negotiations Stall

Congress appears to be deadlocked on an additional aid package to assist individuals, industries, and small businesses struggling as a result of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. While the White House and the U.S. House were negotiating an aid package and seemed to be close to reaching an agreement, the U.S. Senate was holding firm in resisting any aid package with a significant price tag. The House has approved an aid package with a price tag of $2.2 trillion while the Senate attempted to pass an aid package that had a price tag of roughly a quarter of the package approved by the House. The Senate measure failed to get enough votes to receive consideration by the full Senate. Following the confirmation of Justice Amy Coney Barrett to the Supreme Court, the Senate Leadership announced an adjournment that would extend through the election next week.
