9th Circuit Court Orders EPA to Reassess Environment & Health Risks of Glyphosate

On Friday, June 17th, the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals issued an order to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) directing the agency to reconsider previous determinations relating to the health and safety of glyphosate to humans and the environment. The action of the court was made following a review of cases brought by environmental, farmworker and food-safety advocacy groups which claimed that the EPA did not adequately consider whether glyphosate causes cancer and threatens endangered species. The litigation began after the EPA in early 2020 reauthorized the use of glyphosate citing continued science showing the product as being non-carcinogenic to humans and sufficiently safe if used according to EPA restrictions.
