Chairwoman Stabenow Releases Farm Bill Draft

Today, Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman, Debbie Stabenow (D-MI), released a copy of her draft farm bill. The legislation will go before the Senate Agriculture Committee for consideration next Wednesday and Thursday. At the meeting next week, other Senate members of the Agriculture Committee will have the opportunity to amend the bill. Senate members wishing to amend the bill have until 5:00 p.m. Monday to provide the Committee with amendment language.

Arkansas to Host Farm Bill Field Hearing

On March 30th, the U.S. House of Representative’s Agriculture Committee will hold a Farm Bill field hearing at the Fowler Center on the campus of Arkansas State University in Jonesboro. Attending the hearing will be Chairman of the House Agriculture Committee Frank Lucas (R-Ok) and Congressman Rick Crawford, who is a member of the committee. The event is open to the public. Ag Council members are encouraged to attend and participate in the hearing.

U.S. Senate Announces Farm Bill Hearing Schedule

Senate Agriculture Committee Chairwoman Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) announced plans to hold Farm Bill hearings in the coming weeks.

The schedule and topics announced by the Chairwoman are: (Feb. 15) Energy and Economic Growth for Rural America — to evaluate policies that stimulate investments in rural business that create jobs and opportunities for farmers; (Feb. 29) Strengthening Conservation — to explore conservation programs that help farmers maintain soil and water quality, provide wildlife habitat and contribute to enhanced productivity; (Mar. 7) Healthy Food Initiatives, Local Production and Nutrition — to explore policies that assist the development of local markets for farmers to better position them to meet the growing consumer demand for locally-produced, healthy food options; and (March 14) Risk Management — to evaluate the need for and cost effectiveness of risk management tools available to farmers who continue to face increasingly volatile crop prices, input costs and the threat of natural disasters; and how the federal government can provide appropriate risk-management tools while making the best use of limited resources.

The ACA encourages members to provide input to Senator Boozman who sits on the Senate Agriculture Committee.

Call to Action on Free Trade Agreements

On Monday, President Obama submitted to Congress the three Free Trade Agreements (FTAs) with Columbia, Panama, and South Korea. These FTAs are currently under consideration in Congress and may come for a vote in the near future. The Agricultural Council of Arkansas asks its members to contact members of the Arkansas Congressional Delegation to let them know of your support for these free trade agreements. These FTAs, if approved by Congress and signed into law by the President, will help expand export markets for Arkansas farmers, create American jobs, and grow America’s economy. It’s important that our Senators and Representatives support moving these agreements forward and vote in favor of them.
