Ag Council of Arkansas August Meeting Summary
The Ag Council of Arkansas Board of Directors held its annual August meeting in Jonesboro on August 19th. The meeting featured a several guest speakers, including First District Congressman Rick Crawford. Other speakers included James McJunkins, CEO of Farm Credit MidSouth, and Lisa Ferrell, a real estate developer and attorney.
Congressman Crawford provided an update from Washington, D.C., in which he spoke to the ongoing trade disputes and negotiations, farm bill implementation, disaster and trade assistance, and regulatory matters facing the agriculture industry.
James McJunkins provided an overview of economic conditions facing Arkansas farmers and the row crop industry at large, and he offered advice for adapting to the challenges and opportunities at play today and in the future.
Lisa Ferrell provided an overview of the Opportunity Zone program, which offers tax incentives for economic investments in businesses located and doing business in certain designated areas, many of which are located in East Arkansas. The Opportunity Zone program was part of the Jobs and Tax Act of 2017, and it offers capital gains tax reductions for certain investments in designated areas.
