USDA NASS Releases Report on 2018 Arkansas Crop Production

On Friday, February 8th, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released a new report summarizing Arkansas crop acres and production yields for the 2018 crop year.

Arkansas corn area harvested for grain is 645,000 acres, up 8 percent from 2017. The average yield is estimated at 181 bushels per acre, down 2 bushels from last year. Production totaled 117 million bushels, up 7 percent from 2017. 

Upland cotton harvested acres is 480,000 acres, up 10 percent from 2017. Upland cotton is expected to average 1,150 pounds per acre, down 27 pounds per acre from 2017. Production is estimated at 1.15 million bales, up 7 percent from 2017. 

All hay harvested is 1.20 million acres, down 7 percent from 2017. The average yield is estimated at 1.80 tons per acre, down 0.20 ton from last year. Production totaled 2.17 million tons, down 16 percent from 2017. 

Area harvested for peanuts is 23,000 acres, down 21 percent from 2017. The average yield is estimated at 5,000 pounds per acre, down 300 pounds per acre from last year. Production totaled 115 million pounds, down 25 percent from 2017. 

All rice acres harvested is 1.43 million acres, up 29 percent from 2017. The all rice average yield is estimated at 7,520 pounds per acre, up 30 pounds from last year. Production totaled 107 million hundredweight, up 30 percent from 2017. 

Sorghum area harvested for grain is 10,000 acres, up 43 percent from 2017. The average yield is estimated at 77 bushels per acre, down 1 bushel from last year. Production totaled 770,000 bushels, up 41 percent from 2017. 

Soybean area harvested is 3.24 million acres, down 7 percent from 2017. The average yield is estimated at 51 bushels per acre, unchanged from last year and a tie for the record yield for the State. Production totaled 165 million bushels, down 7 percent from 2017. 

Sweet potato area harvested is 4,800 acres for 2018. The average yield is estimated at 220 hundredweight per acre. Production totaled 1.06 million hundredweight for 2018. 

Area seeded to winter wheat is forecasted to decrease 31 percent from the previous year to 120,000 acres. If realized, this will be the lowest acres 1955.
