Shutdown of Federal Government Continues
The U.S. federal government remains largely shutdown due to an ongoing dispute between the White House and Congress on border security. The shutdown is now officially the longest such lapse in federal funding in U.S. history. The lack of funds have led to office closings and employee furloughs, which has significantly limited the function of government and government services.
The impact is being felt by the U.S. agriculture industry in a variety of ways, most notable in the function of U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) Farm Service Agency (FSA) services related to farm bill programs, including the delivery of much needed and critical farm payments. The shutdown has also led to a lapse in reporting from USDA on the World Agriculture Supply and Demand Estimates (WASDE) report for January.
