Farm Bill Negotiations Continue Despite Expiration and Elections

The four principal negotiators of the 2018 farm bill held a meeting in Washington, D.C., on Thursday in an effort to continue the momentum of the negotiations despite a failure to accomplish the work before the previous law expired and Congress recessed for the November mid-term elections. The hope among the negotiators is to make enough headway that a new farm bill could be prepared for debate in the lame duck session following the election and before the new Congress starts in January.

Pressure is mounting with low commodity prices and ongoing market disruption due to trade disputes.
