USDA Releases Final 2017 Crop Production Estimates for Arkansas

On January 12, the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released a report estimated production and stocks for Arkansas. The report estimated crop production amounts for the 2017 crop year. The big news for the 2017 crop year was related to soybeans, which had a record crop in acreage (3.5 million acres), yield (51 bushels per acre), and production (179 million bushels). Cotton also experienced its highest yield on record at 1,205 pounds per acre.

Below is a summary of the report for each commodity:

Corn: Area harvested for grain is 595,000 acres, down 20 percent from 2016. The average yield is estimated at 183 bushels per acre, up 12 bushels from last year. Production totaled 109 million bushels, down 15 percent from 2016.

Cotton: All cotton harvested acres is 438,000 acres, up 17 percent from 2016. All cotton is expected to average 1,205 pounds per acre, up 130 pounds per acre from 2016 and the highest yield on record. Production is forecast at 1.10 million bales, up 31 percent from 2016.

All Hay: All hay harvested is 1.16 million acres, down 3 percent from 2016. The average yield is estimated at 2.00 tons per acre, unchanged from last year. Production totaled 2.33 million tons, down 3 percent from 2016.

Peanuts: Area harvested for peanuts is 29,000 acres, up 26 percent from 2016. The average yield is estimated at 5,100 pounds per acre, up 300 pounds per acre from last year. Production totaled 148 million pounds, up 34 percent from 2016.

Rice: All rice acres harvested is 1.10 million acres, down 27 percent from 2016. The all rice average yield is estimated at 7,490 pounds per acre, up 570 pounds from last year. Production totaled 82.6 million hundredweight, down 22 percent from 2016.

Sorghum: Area harvested for grain is 7,000 acres, down 84 percent from 2016 and the lowest harvested acres since 1944. The average yield is estimated at 76 bushels per acre, up 3 bushels from last year. Production totaled 532,000 bushels, down 83 percent from 2016.

Soybeans: Area harvested for soybeans is 3.50 million acres, up 13 percent from 2016. The average yield is estimated at 51 bushels per acre, up 4 bushels from last year and a record yield for the State. Production totaled 179 million bushels, up 23 percent from 2016 and the highest production on record.

Winter Wheat: Area seeded to winter wheat is forecasted to decrease 15 percent from the previous year to 170,000 acres. This will be the lowest acres seeded since 1962.
